Private Evening in Edinburgh Castle, Saturday 8th October

Edinburgh Castle A Private View

Sitting proud above the streets of the city centre, Edinburgh Castle is perfectly located.  With a long rich history as a royal residence, military garrison, prison and fortress, it is alive with many exciting tales. As you climb Castle Hill, you walk in the footsteps of soldiers, kings and queens – and even the odd pirate or two.

Edinburgh Castle is home to the Scottish Crown Jewels and The Stone of Destiny (the ancient coronation stone still in use today), which you will view exclusively as part of your private evening.

Your evening begins with your entrance at the Castle after it has closed to the public.

A piper will be there to herald your arrival as you take the short walk from the gate to Crown Square. Champagne and canapes will be served in the square prior to viewing of the Scottish Crown Jewels & The Stone of Destiny.

The Scottish Crown Jewels

The Scottish Crown Jewels are referred to as the “Honours of Scotland.”  The regalia were first used together at the coronation of the infant Mary Queen of Scots in 1543. The last occasion on which they were used was the coronation of Charles II as King of Scots, at Scone on the 1st January 1651.

The Stone of Destiny is an ancient symbol of Scotland’s monarchy, used for centuries in the inauguration of its kings. Seen as a sacred object, its earliest origins are now unknown.

Dining in the Castle

Following the private viewing, you will be piped into dinner in the Queen Anne Room.

This old gunpowder store has been transformed into an elegant, prestigious room at the heart of the Castle. This magnificent banqueting room, with an adjoining glazed courtyard, leads directly out onto Crown Square.

Beating the Retreat

The evening will end as the Beating the Retreat is performed by a 16 -piece band in Castle Square for you exclusively.

Beating Retreat is a military ceremony dating to 17th-century England and was first used to recall nearby patrolling units to their castle.
